TRACK OF THE MONTH / december 2019: Glitch by Music Orange

Glitch: TRACK OF THE MONTH / december 2019*

This month…Tranquil tones introduce an otherworldly "Glitch" before the beats drop. But even then, these rhythms have more in common with tropical downtempo than anything you might hear at a party in the city. The pan flute sampled melodies and ambient bird chirps make it easy to imagine dancing with sand underneath your feet, somewhere in a mildly humid atmosphere.

Things We Like: Oblique Strategies by Music Orange

brian-eno-oblique-strategies.jpg

If your job requires you to create original material, you know that sometimes the blank page can be blinding. Or maybe you’re part way through a project and can’t find the best path to move forward. In 1975 musician Brian Eno and artist Peter Schmidt jointly compiled a list of prompts, suggestions, and aphorisms to help break the mental gridlock creators often experience and published them as a collection of cards called Oblique Strategies. The idea is that the musician or artist can randomly select a card at any time in order to encourage lateral thinking. Examples include:

  • Use an old idea.

  • State the problem in words as clearly as possible.

  • Are there sections? Consider transitions.

  • Work at a different speed.

The prompts are deliberately vague but can knock you out of your rut if used sparingly and deliberately. There have been many editions and it’s not hard to find used versions, but you can pick up the latest edition at the Eno Shop.

Check It Out: Noel Fielding to Write Netflix Show About an Enchanted Turntable by Music Orange

noel-fielding.jpg

British comedian and co-creator of the cult comedy series The Mighty Boosh, Noel Fielding, is making a new show for Netflix. "Basically a guy gets hold of a magic record player and when you put the record player on a portal appears and you can go inside your favourite albums," Fielding said. Sounds as strange and surreal as The Boosh to us and is something that is on our radar. No word yet on when it will air.

TRACK OF THE MONTH / november 2019: Fa La La La La by Music Orange

Fa La La La La: TRACK OF THE MONTH / november 2019*

This month…Did you know that the Holiday carol "Deck The Halls" is of Welsh origin, dating back to the 16th century? This vivacious version is a 21st century upgrade that swings with a snappy tempo under chiming bells, lush strings, and a lively energy that mirrors the modern bustle of today's Yuletide season.

Things We Like: Phenakistiscope Vinyl Records by Music Orange

music-orange-kate-bush.gif

Of all the unusual gimmicks applied to vinyl records - from colored vinyl to locked grooves to records that randomly play different versions of a song - phenakistiscopes are among our favorites. A phenakistiscope is a rotating disc with images printed around its perimeter that appear to animate when viewed under a strobe light (the above phenakistiscope is Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) 2012 Remix). All you need is 1) a turntable, 2) a strobe light with adjustable speed or a vinyl strobe app such as VinylStrobe for iOS or Strobily for Android, and 3) a phenakistiscope disc or slip mat. A Google search for “phenakistiscope vinyl” or “zoetrope vinyl” will yield a ton of results, but be sure to check out the latest Sculpture record or the slip mats sold by TheFisherKingStore. TRACK OF THE MONTH / october 2019: Stomping Ground by Music Orange

Stomping Ground: TRACK OF THE MONTH / october 2019*

This month…Layered handclaps, wooden blocks, and other organic toned percussion open "Stomping Ground" with a kinetic sounding shuffle. But when short bursts of electric guitar and airhorns enter the scene, it all sounds a bit inspired by Brazilian new rave (think CSS). As the rhythmic layers continue to build, the song morphs into punk-pointed dance pop (not too unlike Dragonette or The Ting Tings).

Every Noise at Once is a tool that attempts to list every musical genre there is, visually represented on the page so you can see how they sonically relate to one another, and with audio examples for each! Not sure what the difference is between Aggrotech and Terrorcore? No problem, just listen to the examples. And clicking on any genre will take you to a page of artists that are representative of that genre. It's a fun and valuable tool for composers and curious listeners alike.

TRACK OF THE MONTH / september 2019: Slow Your Roll by Music Orange

Slow Your Roll: TRACK OF THE MONTH / september 2019*

This month…Although "Slow Your Roll" isn't technically acid-jazz, it does hark back to that magic time of the early '90s when bands like The Brand New Heavies and Greyboy Allstars were being buzzed by groovy people. This jam kicks off on a vintage organ strut that would make Booker T. Jones proud. But when the funky house beat kicks in, it's easy to remember that groove is in the heart. Other instrumental layers include some sweet guitar licks, a spooky sounding synthesizer and sublime background vocals.

#TBT: Sprint: "Sprint Holiday Viral Website Experience" by Music Orange

not-so-subtle-holiday-hint-choir.jpg

Back in 2008, John Zissimos and Shelly Townsend contacted us to arrange and produce a Holiday choir for Sprint’s interactive greeting card. Users could type in anything that they might want for the holidays and the recipient would be implored to buy it for them by the “Not-So-Subtle Holiday Hint Choir.” We wrote the arrangement and recorded the choir during a live shoot, which you can see by watching the clip.
