TRACK OF THE MONTH / february 2020: Hot Mic by Music Orange

Hot Mic: TRACK OF THE MONTH / february 2020*

This month…There's something slightly mischievous sounding about "Hot Mic." The searing electric guitar distortion pumped through vintage reverb recalls the instrumental soundtracks to old biker b-movies from the 1960s. But when those bouncing handclap rhythms arrive to the party, the whole tone changes to an upbeat and friendly feel, sounding more like a California beach-blanket dance party.

TRACK OF THE MONTH / january 2020: Sugarsonic by Music Orange

Sugarsonic TRACK OF THE MONTH / january 2020*

This month…"Sugarsonic" immediately drops the listener into a well-oiled party machine of driving, automated beats. The tune borrows a bit from late 1980s and early 1990s industrial dance production before lo-fi rhymes from an MC join the fun, alongside a catchy horn part that gives the song a more timeless feel.

TRACK OF THE MONTH / december 2019: Glitch by Music Orange

Glitch: TRACK OF THE MONTH / december 2019*

This month…Tranquil tones introduce an otherworldly "Glitch" before the beats drop. But even then, these rhythms have more in common with tropical downtempo than anything you might hear at a party in the city. The pan flute sampled melodies and ambient bird chirps make it easy to imagine dancing with sand underneath your feet, somewhere in a mildly humid atmosphere.

Things We Like: Oblique Strategies by Music Orange

brian-eno-oblique-strategies.jpg

If your job requires you to create original material, you know that sometimes the blank page can be blinding. Or maybe you’re part way through a project and can’t find the best path to move forward. In 1975 musician Brian Eno and artist Peter Schmidt jointly compiled a list of prompts, suggestions, and aphorisms to help break the mental gridlock creators often experience and published them as a collection of cards called Oblique Strategies. The idea is that the musician or artist can randomly select a card at any time in order to encourage lateral thinking. Examples include:

  • Use an old idea.

  • State the problem in words as clearly as possible.

  • Are there sections? Consider transitions.

  • Work at a different speed.

The prompts are deliberately vague but can knock you out of your rut if used sparingly and deliberately. There have been many editions and it’s not hard to find used versions, but you can pick up the latest edition at the Eno Shop.

British comedian and co-creator of the cult comedy series The Mighty Boosh, Noel Fielding, is making a new show for Netflix. "Basically a guy gets hold of a magic record player and when you put the record player on a portal appears and you can go inside your favourite albums," Fielding said. Sounds as strange and surreal as The Boosh to us and is something that is on our radar. No word yet on when it will air.
