TRACK OF THE MONTH / august 2020: Cookin' At the 45 by Music Orange

Cookin' At the 45: TRACK OF THE MONTH / august 2020*

This month…"Cookin' At the 45" recalls those hep pockets of the 1990s when young acid jazz ensembles began bubbling up from the underground. Bouncy piano melodies and cool horn notes blast over layered beats and a dubstep-textured bass wobble to create an awesome contrast of vintage tones and innovative production. Imagine a distillation of Blue Note Records strewn through a sci-fi soundtrack filter.

TRACK OF THE MONTH / july 2020: Army of One by Music Orange

Army of One: TRACK OF THE MONTH / july 2020*

"Army of One" is a lush, chilling soundscape that begins with ominous ambient drones and pulsing tones. The contrast of pitched-down notes and sped-up vocals then unfolds into a realm where erratic beats and a foreboding bass dance dramatically around stormy sounding synthesizers. In the middle of this musical maelstrom blooms a bewitching melody.

Digitalis: TRACK OF THE MONTH / june 2020*

This month…"Digitalis" grooves with a modern cosmopolitan coolness. Urban rooted elements give this song the rhythm of a subway, while a beautifully eerie choir of distant sounding voices builds up to an epic apex.

TRACK OF THE MONTH / may 2020: Pajama Day by Music Orange

Pajama Day: TRACK OF THE MONTH / may 2020*

This month…When sheltering in place, any day can be a Pajama Day. And this bouncy ditty pairs perfectly with those cozy days when we just don't heed the need for pants. Maybe it's the intimate acoustic guitar strumming or relaxing reggae rhythms. Or perhaps it's the lazy, loungy melody. But "Pajama Day" is as comforting as your favorite pair of PJ's and it's available in the Acoustipop section of the Music Orange Library Online.

TRACK OF THE MONTH / april 2020: The Underwater Bicycle Club by Music Orange

The Underwater Bicycle Club: TRACK OF THE MONTH / april 2020*

This month…"The Underwater Bicycle Club" plucks, strums, and hums with organic mechanics. That is to say, these classical instruments of wood, wire, and wind play with the clockwork precision of a well-tuned bicycle. But from within these syncopated kinetics can be heard a living, breathing melody that exhales the whimsical notes of exuberance and joy - not too unlike that of a Wes Anderson film score.

TRACK OF THE MONTH / february 2020: Hot Mic by Music Orange

Hot Mic: TRACK OF THE MONTH / february 2020*

This month…There's something slightly mischievous sounding about "Hot Mic." The searing electric guitar distortion pumped through vintage reverb recalls the instrumental soundtracks to old biker b-movies from the 1960s. But when those bouncing handclap rhythms arrive to the party, the whole tone changes to an upbeat and friendly feel, sounding more like a California beach-blanket dance party.

TRACK OF THE MONTH / january 2020: Sugarsonic by Music Orange

Sugarsonic TRACK OF THE MONTH / january 2020*

This month…"Sugarsonic" immediately drops the listener into a well-oiled party machine of driving, automated beats. The tune borrows a bit from late 1980s and early 1990s industrial dance production before lo-fi rhymes from an MC join the fun, alongside a catchy horn part that gives the song a more timeless feel.

TRACK OF THE MONTH / december 2019: Glitch by Music Orange

Glitch: TRACK OF THE MONTH / december 2019*

This month…Tranquil tones introduce an otherworldly "Glitch" before the beats drop. But even then, these rhythms have more in common with tropical downtempo than anything you might hear at a party in the city. The pan flute sampled melodies and ambient bird chirps make it easy to imagine dancing with sand underneath your feet, somewhere in a mildly humid atmosphere.

TRACK OF THE MONTH / november 2019: Fa La La La La by Music Orange

Fa La La La La: TRACK OF THE MONTH / november 2019*

This month…Did you know that the Holiday carol "Deck The Halls" is of Welsh origin, dating back to the 16th century? This vivacious version is a 21st century upgrade that swings with a snappy tempo under chiming bells, lush strings, and a lively energy that mirrors the modern bustle of today's Yuletide season.

TRACK OF THE MONTH / october 2019: Stomping Ground by Music Orange

Stomping Ground: TRACK OF THE MONTH / october 2019*

This month…Layered handclaps, wooden blocks, and other organic toned percussion open "Stomping Ground" with a kinetic sounding shuffle. But when short bursts of electric guitar and airhorns enter the scene, it all sounds a bit inspired by Brazilian new rave (think CSS). As the rhythmic layers continue to build, the song morphs into punk-pointed dance pop (not too unlike Dragonette or The Ting Tings).

TRACK OF THE MONTH / september 2019: Slow Your Roll by Music Orange

Slow Your Roll: TRACK OF THE MONTH / september 2019*

This month…Although "Slow Your Roll" isn't technically acid-jazz, it does hark back to that magic time of the early '90s when bands like The Brand New Heavies and Greyboy Allstars were being buzzed by groovy people. This jam kicks off on a vintage organ strut that would make Booker T. Jones proud. But when the funky house beat kicks in, it's easy to remember that groove is in the heart. Other instrumental layers include some sweet guitar licks, a spooky sounding synthesizer and sublime background vocals.

TRACK OF THE MONTH / august 2019: Mirrors on the Wall by Music Orange

Mirrors on the Wall: TRACK OF THE MONTH / august 2019*

This month…When you listen to "Mirrors on the Wall," you will fully understand that the bass was invented to make people shake, shimmy, and strut. But here we come to further understand that deep funk rhythm is a chemistry: bass needs drums. And these beats lay down a groove so infectious, it just might stay in your head all day long. Add in some awesome sounding sonic accoutrements like analog synths and robotic vocals and suddenly it seems like Jamiroquai and Daft Punk threw a party…and this is the invitation.

Green-Light: TRACK OF THE MONTH / july 2019*

This month…If you’re looking for an energetic ska instrumental that’s retro but not kitschy, look no further. "Green-Light" packs the punch of yesteryear’s 2 Tone Records, but with a more modern mix. Playful electric guitar leads bounce alongside bobbing rhythms, punchy drums, and a classic horn section that sounds so good, you can literally hear a party starting in the background.

TRACK OF THE MONTH / june 2019: Head Held High by Music Orange

Head Held High: TRACK OF THE MONTH / june 2019*

This month…A pulsing rhythm and vibrant energy give "Head Held High" a human quality – at times it seems like the song is breathing. This balances beautifully with the mechanical textures and tones that build the song’s electronic foundation. But it’s the uplifting melodies and anthemic feel that will make you want to hold your head high while listening.

TRACK OF THE MONTH / may 2019: The Flow by Music Orange

The Flow: TRACK OF THE MONTH / may 2019*

This month...Straight out of the gate, “The Flow” plays like a party jam. Lively piano notes kick off the festivities with a rolling drum beat and samples of people laughing in the background. Two electric guitars show up to trade off playful riffs before a horn section saunters in and joins the fun. But before the party’s over, some synthesizers arrive to add another animated melody.

TRACK OF THE MONTH / april 2019: Shadow Puppets by Music Orange

Shadow Puppets: TRACK OF THE MONTH / april 2019*

This month...Tropical sounding chimes set a relaxed vibe for "Shadow Puppets," an apt title for an alluring instrumental that sounds like it could accompany a modern-day take on Balinese shadow puppet theater. The plucked string notes dance and flutter around core cello arrangements that envelope the song without dominating it. Throughout this piece, sublime percussion parts provide a jubilant rhythm.

TRACK OF THE MONTH / march 2019: I Belong to You by Music Orange

I Belong to You: TRACK OF THE MONTH / march 2019*

This month..."I Belong To You" begins as a simple serenade - just some soft chords strummed on a guitar. But when sparse piano notes trickle in alongside pronounced percussion and lilting strings, the dynamic changes from solo serenade to acoustic ensemble, making for a lush and romantic piece of music. Add in a glockenspiel and the mood changes again from amorous to playful.

TRACK OF THE MONTH / february 2019: Nova by Music Orange

Nova: TRACK OF THE MONTH / february 2019*

This month...Taking its cues from 21st century Southern Rap production styles, “Nova” opens with mellow, undulating synth and piano tones, setting a chilled-out vibe. After the slow pulsing thump of the bass drum drops alongside a gated rimshot, it’s easy to imagine Travis Scott or Migos adding their magic over this smoldering instrumental track.

TRACK OF THE MONTH / january 2019: Fortified by Music Orange

Fortified: TRACK OF THE MONTH / january 2019*

This month..."Fortified" is both tough and melodic. It begins by building on layers of different rhythmic textures - finger snaps mix with bubbling notes before an old school 1990s flavored production drops big booming beats, bolstered by a bass that could rattle the windows of a car (with a decent sound system). The melodic hook eases into the song with the confident cadence of a double dutch jump rope champion.

You can find "Fortified" in the HIP HOP...URBAN section of The Music Orange Library Online (MOLO).

TRACK OF THE MONTH / december 2018: Heat Wave by Music Orange

Heat Wave: TRACK OF THE MONTH / december 2018*

This month..."Heat Wave" is a perfect name for a tune that kicks off with the warmth of a vintage electric guitar riff. But it's the feverish groove that gets the temperature rising with cowbells, congas, shakers and timbales. Everything about this jam sizzles - the heated horn section, the peppery backing vocals, and a bass-line that bounces around like it's dancing barefoot on hot cement.
